Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that involves an electronic derma roller that pricks the skin using very small needles.

At Avani Derm Spa, we offer microneedling in St. Louis for quality skin rejuvenation.

This treatment enhances the natural production of collagen and elastin in the body. When these two proteins are present at their optimal levels, they help heal areas of your skin. This makes the overall appearance of a treated area look younger, smoother, and tighter. There is no downtime necessary after treatment.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that uses tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating collagen and elastin production. Also called collagen induction therapy, it can improve skin texture, soften visible lines, and reduce the appearance of certain scars as the treated tissue heals.

Collagen gives skin structure, while elastin helps it stretch and rebound. Microneedling stimulates collagen production through the skin’s natural healing response. Collagen remodeling begins over the next few weeks and continues for months, supporting smoother skin and improved skin elasticity. The initial glow after a session is different from the deeper changes that develop as new collagen forms.

At Avani Derm Spa, cosmetic microneedling treats the skin more superficially, while medical microneedling reaches deeper layers within the dermis. Our motorized pen device allows depth to be selected for the treatment area and concern. Your provider considers scar depth, skin tone, sensitivity, and healing history when recommending an approach.

Am I a Good Candidate for Microneedling?

One of the greatest parts of microneedling is its versatility. Because it's a minimally invasive procedure that doesn't rely on thermal energy (heat), it's safe for almost all skin types, including darker skin tones. Patients with darker skin often face a higher risk of hyperpigmentation with lasers, making microneedling an excellent, safe alternative for skin rejuvenation.

You are likely a good microneedling candidate if you wish to improve:

  • Texture issues: Such as enlarged pores, acne scars, surgical scars, or rough skin.
  • Aging concerns: Including fine lines, facial wrinkles, and loose skin.
  • Pigmentation: Such as uneven skin tone, dark spots, or melasma.
  • Body concerns: Including stretch marks on the abdomen or thighs.

Certain conditions may require you to wait or avoid microneedling. Patients with active acne (pustules), open wounds, active skin infections, or a weakened immune system should postpone treatment. During your microneedling consultation at our St. Louis office, we will review your medical history to ensure this is the right treatment for you.

Benefits of Microneedling

Microneedling offers a way to improve skin quality through collagen stimulation, with settings that can address different concerns across the face, neck, and selected body areas. The Avani Derm Spa team plans treatment around the changes you want to see and the recovery your skin needs.

Benefits may include:

  • Support for collagen production and a firmer-looking complexion
  • Smoother texture and more even-looking skin tone
  • Gradual improvement in fine lines and certain scars
  • Adjustable treatment depth for superficial refreshment or deeper correction
  • An option for many skin types, including darker skin tones, following assessment
  • Less social downtime than more intensive resurfacing treatments, depending on treatment depth

Microneedling does require healing time. Mild redness, mild swelling, tightness, and dryness can follow treatment, and pigment changes remain possible. Your provider will discuss those considerations alongside the expected benefits. A series allows improvement between visits. Results and maintenance needs vary with your skin and the concern being treated.

What Does Microneedling Address?

Microneedling can improve various skin concerns that affect texture, tone, and firmness. The type of concern matters: indented scar tissue needs a different assessment from a dark spot or early fine lines.

  • Acne scars: Medical microneedling can soften some depressed scars left after breakouts. Active, inflamed acne should settle before treatment. Deep or tethered scars may need other approaches.
  • Fine lines and wrinkles: Collagen renewal may soften fine creases and facial wrinkles. Changes build over time rather than appearing immediately after the appointment.
  • Rough or uneven texture: Treatment can refine the skin’s surface for a smoother complexion and less noticeable textural irregularities.
  • Enlarged pores: Improved skin texture may make pores look less prominent. Pores remain a normal part of the skin and cannot be erased.
  • Dark spots and uneven skin tone: Selected pigmentation concerns may improve, but melasma and a history of discoloration after irritation require careful planning.
  • Mild skin laxity: Collagen and elastin remodeling may improve early loss of firmness. Significant loose skin generally needs a different treatment strategy.
  • Stretch marks and selected surgical scars: A series may soften their texture and visibility. Treatment aims for improvement, rather than complete removal.

Your provider will assess the concern before recommending microneedling, a facial, chemical peel, laser treatment, or a staged combination. That evaluation helps establish what can improve, how many sessions may be appropriate, and what results are realistic for your skin.

Treatment Plan

Best Microneedling Results

The number of procedures needed for desired results will depend on the areas you are having treated and the current state of the skin in the areas.

As with any cosmetic procedure, microneedling results vary from person to person.

The most common treatment plans require 3-6 sessions, but more may be needed if you are planning to treat deep scars or stretch marks. It’s also important to note that the time between each visit is typically 4 weeks but is different for each individual.

At that point, we recommend one treatment per quarter, to continue to build and improve the skin. St. Louis microneedling patients who follow the one-per-quarter maintenance schedule report dramatic skin improvement over time.

I live in a rural area half of the year so I know what it’s like not to have services available like this!”

What to Expect Before Treatment

You will have a pre-treatment microneedling consultation with your administering medical professional, where they will come up with a treatment plan and go over any pre-procedure instructions.

They will also give you post-treatment care directions to ensure proper healing. For example, avoid using harsh chemicals, makeup, or cleansers on the skin. Remember that your skin is regenerating after a microneedling treatment. Therefore, you will want to be gentle on your skin. Stay hydrated and out of the sun, avoid tanning beds, and avoid vigorous activities such as exercise.

What to Expect During Microneedling Treatment

An appointment typically lasts about an hour, with pre-screening and prep time included.

The microneedling itself is usually only 30-45 minutes long. The tool mimics a pen, with the end containing small needles that will gently puncture the skin. The procedure is essentially painless, with only mild discomfort reported in highly sensitive areas such as the upper lip. It is normal for your skin to feel warm or tight and have a red or pink tint as a result of the mild irritation caused by the treatment.

Microneedling is a therapeutic treatment in which an electric pen device delivers tiny needle pricks to the skin. This process stimulates the skin’s natural healing response. Microneedling aims to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and scars and correct hyperpigmentation and melasma by stimulating collagen and other natural growth factors. This treatment is great for the maintenance of skin’s texture, tone, and strength.

Cosmetic Microneedling is a superficial level of needling designed to brighten the skin and improve the penetration of the product. This treatment has almost no downtime and is great for the maintenance of the skin’s texture, tone, and strength.

Microneedling Results

While many patients notice an immediate "glow" and improvement in skin tone shortly after their first treatment session, microneedling results refine over time. The process relies on collagen induction, the body's natural production of new collagen and elastin, which takes time to build.

  • Short-Term: Within a few days, you may see a reduction in redness and a brighter complexion as the treated skin exfoliates.
  • Long-Term: Significant changes, such as the softening of deep scarring or the reduction of stretch marks, typically appear after multiple treatments. Optimal results are usually visible three to six months after completing a series of treatments, as the collagen matrix continues to mature and tighten.

To maintain these results, most St. Louis Microneedling patients benefit from a maintenance plan that may include quarterly sessions or a good homecare regimen using medical-grade skin care products.

Microneedling

Frequently Asked Questions

Most people find the treatment very tolerable. We apply a high-strength topical anesthesia (numbing cream) about 30 to 45 minutes before we perform microneedling. This significantly reduces any discomfort you may feel. The microneedling device uses ultra-thin needles that enter the skin vertically; while you may feel light pressure or a scratching sensation, it is rarely described as painful.

Microneedling is a minimally invasive option with relatively low downtime. Immediately after the procedure, the treated area will look red and feel warm, similar to a moderate sunburn. This typically subsides within a few hours to 24 hours. You may experience some dryness or flaking for a few days. We recommend you wait at least 24 hours to wear makeup or apply makeup to prevent clogging the fresh micro-channels.

Yes. Emerging studies indicate that microneedling can be an effective therapy for androgenic alopecia (pattern hair loss). The tiny needles stimulate blood flow to the follicles and can enhance the absorption of topical hair growth medications, potentially leading to improved hair density.

Absolutely, combining therapies can often lead to more noticeable results over time. For example, adding Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) to your session delivers growth factors directly into the tiny holes created by the needles, accelerating healing and boosting collagen production. We can also alternate microneedling with chemical peels to address surface pigmentation and uneven skin tone more aggressively.

Yes, but patience is key. To effectively treat acne scars, especially deep ice-pick or boxcar scars, the microneedling technique must be performed at a medical depth. This breaks up the fibrous bands of scar tissue and stimulates the skin to fill in the depressions with new collagen. Achieving the desired results for scarring typically requires a series of 3 to 6 treatments spaced four to six weeks apart.
